US and NATO counterterrorism policies – including military interventions - are not an “excuse” or a smokescreen to pursue other goals: they are a response to the real and very serious threat of global jihadist terrorism. On September 11, 2001 Al-Qaeda terrorists launched the most devastating terrorist attack in history and killed almost 3,000 people, mostly American. ISIS/Daesh killed 130 innocents in a series of attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015. Other high-profile bloody attacks have taken place in Madrid, Bali, Barcelona, Sharm El Sheikh, Manchester, Istanbul, Berlin, Tikrit (Iraq), Nice, Baga (Nigeria), Nairobi.

The United States, NATO, the EU and other Western and non-Western international allies have been engaged in the global war on terrorism since 2001: against Al Qaeda, responsible for the terrorist attacks in America on 11 September, and against Daesh/ISIS and other radical Islamist terrorist groups around the world. Despite significant achievements, Jihadist terrorism is a still a real and constantly evolving threat.

Jihadist groups are active in bloody civil wars around the Muslim world, in countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, Yemen, and other countries. In these countries Jihadists are contributing to human suffering on a mass scale, and they are expanding the scale of their operations in the Sahel and West Africa.

The spontaneous onset of the Euromaidan protests was a reaction by numerous segments of the Ukrainian population to former president Viktor Yanukovych’s sudden departure from the promised Association Agreement with the European Union in November 2013.

Glorification of Nazism in all its forms has long been a "normal" trend in Ukrainian national politics. This logically follows from the main ideological doctrine of the Ukrainian state which regards the Russian Federation as absolute evil and therefore a sworn enemy.

The logic of political "Ukrainity" fits into a dubious formula, both morally and logically, of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend". More concretely it means: "The Hitler Nazis were enemies of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation and the successor of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation is an enemy of Ukraine. Therefore, the Hitler Nazis are friends of Ukraine. "

The Kremlin has been using this myth actively since then to discredit Kyiv’s shift towards Euro-Atlantic policy.
