DISINFO: US contractors help prepare chemical provocations in Ukraine

SUMMARY

Moscow has information according to which US contractors are helping to prepare chemical provocations in Ukraine.

At the current session of the OPCW member countries, the Russian side provided information about "contract soldiers who help Ukrainian nationalists in these chemical preparations."

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about false flag operations and chemical weapons attacks. Such claims are a part of a broader pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign accompanying the full scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, trying to place the blame for the war's atrocities on Ukraine and the US.

Claims about false flag operations about nuclear or chemical weapons attacks are a staple of the pro-Kremlin disinformation apparatus. Such claims are a part of a broader pro-Kremlin information manipulation campaign supporting the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine and trying to place the blame for the war’s atrocities on Ukraine, as our recent analysis explains.

There is no evidence to back the claim that Ukraine is preparing a chemical provocation or a use of the weapons of mass destruction, nor is there any evidence proving that the US contract soldiers are helping Ukraine in this. Оn the contrary, many Western leaders have real concerns Russia could use chemical weapons.

Moscow has a history of falsely accusing its opponents of staging "provocations" which either never happened at all, or were subsequently carried out by themselves or their allies.

Read similar cases claiming that The US, not Russia, has not disposed of its toxic war material, that Ukraine aims to use Turkish Bayraktars for chemical attacks, that Ukraine is preparing a false flag chemical attack to damage the image of Russia, that Ukraine, led by the West, prepares a dirty bomb attack, that West needs provocations to accuse the Russian military of using chemical, biological or nuclear weapons in Ukraine, or that Kyiv prepares chemical attacks to blame the Russian army.
