DISINFO: US opposing Nord Stream 2 therefore supporting the 2014 Coup

SUMMARY

(With former US President Donald Trump refusing the Nord Stream2 project)... emphasising again that his country is only concerned with its own interests, and that others should implement its plans and goals without regard to their higher national interests... The United States, therefore, supports the coup in Ukraine in 2014 and ignores the right of the Russian majority in Crimea to self-determination.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative trying to undermine the sovereignty of Ukraine, while painting the 2013-14 protests in Kyiv as a coup d'état.

The United States sees the Nord Stream 2 pipeline as a Russian geopolitical project intended to divide Europe and weaken European energy security. However, there is no basis for the claims that it supports the so-called “2014 Coup”, nor that it is ignoring the rights of the Ukrainian people. US State Secretary Antony J. Blinken affirmed that his country “stands firmly behind the sovereignty and the territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

Likewise, Ukraine has long opposed the project which will take Russian gas to Germany because it will give Moscow the theoretical option to stop routing gas via Ukraine, a move that would deprive Kyiv of billions of dollars in lucrative transit fees and, it says, imperil its security.

Furthermore, there was no coup d’état in Ukraine in 2014. Pro-Kremlin media falsely portray the Euromaidan revolution as a coup d’état. In fact, the popular demonstrations that began in Kyiv in November of 2013 and brought hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians to the streets were protesting against a political decision of Viktor Yanukovych’s government, which at the last minute withdrew from a long-negotiated political association and free trade pact with the EU, choosing instead to accept a $15 billion economic bailout to Russia.

Similarly, Russia occupied Crimea in March 2014. No international body has recognised the so-called referendum in Crimea, not the UN, nor the EU or the UK. UNGA Resolution 68/262, which condemned Russia's illegal actions in Ukraine, was supported by 100 United Nations member states. Only 10 states opposed it.
