DISINFO: Victoria Nuland may be preparing another Ukrainian-style coup in Central America

SUMMARY

With the unprecedented appearance of Victoria Nuland, who operated the whole socio-political coup engineering to overthrow the legitimate president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, it is not unlikely that she will implement the same technique in Central America. It is very disturbing that Nuland was accompanied in her trip to the region by representatives of the National Security Council and military officials of the Southern Command and the Department of Defense. Is there a plan to militarise migratory issues? The magnicide in Haiti 8 days after the visit of the “Nuland procession” to El Salvador wouldn’t make sense, carried out by Colombian soldiers trained by the Pentagon and in synchrony with the visit of Pentagon’s members to Central America, if Victoria Nuland didn’t have in her pocket the chrono-geopolitical agenda of her “Ukrainian model” in Central America and in Latin America in general. By the way, the “democratic” protests in Cuba took place 12 days after Nuland’s advent in El Salvador.

RESPONSE

This is a mix of several recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about popular protests in Ukraine as a foreign-orchestrated coup and about the US as an evil power always conspiring to destabilise other countries, especially in Latin America, and responsible for every disgrace on the continent.

It is false that the fall of Viktor Yanukovych in Ukraine in 2014 during the so-called Euromaidan protests was the result of a foreign-engineered coup. The spontaneous onset of the Euromaidan protests was an organic reaction by numerous parts of the Ukrainian population to former President Yanukovych’s sudden departure from the promised Association Agreement with the European Union in November 2013. Fatigue from corruption, pressure on business, voluntary or forced closures, dissatisfaction with the government's economic policy - for many Euromaidan participants, these reasons also became motives for joining the protests. See here for a previous debunk of this disinformation narrative.

Given that disinformation messages framing the Euromaidan as a foreign-orchestrated coup are false, claims against then-top diplomat for Ukraine at the US State Department, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland (a frequent target of pro-Kremlin disinformation) are also baseless.

The affirmation that Nuland may be preparing to stage a similar coup in Central America or that the Pentagon may have plans to militarise the migration issues are not backed by any evidence (contrary to the claim, the presence of military officials in a US diplomatic tour can’t be considered as such). Mentions to a US hand in the murder of Haitian president Jovenel Moïse and the outbreak of popular protests in Cuba are also disinformation narratives not backed by any proof.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that a UN human rights report on Venezuela aims to de-legitimise the upcoming legislative elections, that violent pro-Maduro thugs are Western media propaganda, that a Twitter campaign against Evo Morales may be run by the CIA, that the West refused to call the coup attempt in Venezuela ‘a coup’, or that an alleged US dirty war in Facebook against Venezuela, Bolivia and Mexico is a new Condor Plan.
