DISINFO: West increases pressure on CIS countries to break old ties

SUMMARY

The United States, in coordination with EU members, does not abandon its attempts to increase pressure on the CIS countries, to break the centuries-old ties between the peoples, and to falsify the history of joint victories.

What is terrible about this gap, we see in the example of Georgia and Ukraine, where there is an unstable political and social situation, a complete collapse of industry, a drop in the living standards of the population. In Ukraine, there is also an armed conflict.

RESPONSE

Recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about belligerent West trying to encircle Russia, to separate post-Soviet (CIS) countries and isolate Russia.

The disinformation message is also consistent with pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the US and its global role and imperialistic ambitions, its attempts to turn Ukraine into its colony to use as a military training ground near Russia and to sever relations between Russia and Georgia.

In what concerns the EU, the Eastern Partnership (EaP) is a joint policy initiative that aims to deepen and strengthen relations between the European Union and its six Eastern neighbours, including four CIS member states: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova, as well as with Ukraine and Georgia.

The Eastern Partnership initiative is not against any country; it is a mutually beneficial and constructive platform for countries in the region to build a closer relationship with the EU if they choose to do so.

The EU or the US do not impose any action or programme on the partner countries. The overall aim of the cooperation is to build a common area of shared democracy, prosperity and stability in line with each individual country's aspirations and wishes. Involvement in the EU initiatives does not exclude membership in the Eurasian Economic Union, CIS or CSTO.

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, it is a well-documented act of aggression by Russian armed forces and far away from being an internal conflict.

The involvement of Russian personnel and equipment in the creation of the DPR and LPR has been well documented already for years. The destabilisation of eastern Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea has been condemned by the Council of the European Union and led to restrictive measures since 2014.

Russia also continues its military presence in both Abkhazia and South Ossetia in violation of international law and commitments undertaken by Russia under the 12 August 2008 agreement, mediated by the European Union.
