There was a military attack as Russian forces seized the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and heavy fighting sparked a blaze in a training building at the site. A Russian projectile hit a building within the site of the plant, causing a localized fire, but none of the reactors was nearby and they were unaffected, according to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi. Russian troops seized Chernobyl at the beginning of their invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. During its occupation of the Chernobyl nuclear site, Russia appears to have stationed troops in an area of high radioactive contamination. Tank treads ripped up the toxic soil, bulldozers carved trenches and bunkers, and soldiers spent a month camped in — and dug into — a radioactive forest.
