Disinfo: Western liberal civilisation is decadent, materialistic, hedonistic and perverse

Summary

Ayatollah Khomeini warned Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union’s last leader, that Russia, after its liberation from godless atheistic communism, should not fall into the trap of Western liberalism, a decadent, materialistic, hedonistic and perverse civilisation. Gorbachev did not heed Khomeini’s warning and Russia fell into the trap of liberalism. Russia would have died in this trap had it not been for Vladimir Putin, who saved everything in Russia that could still be saved.

Disproof

This message is in line with a recurring pro-Kremlin narrative about the West's moral decay aimed at portraying Russia as superior to the West in terms of values and morals. This narrative often claims that President Vladimir Putin saved Russia’s values and identity  from the threat of  Western decadence and that he is the only world leader that protects  traditional European and Christian values. “Threatened values” is one of the most common narratives used by pro-Kremlin outlets.

The article seeks to discredit liberal democracy by repeating  the pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives about the West’s moral decadence, materialism, perverted values, and hostility to traditional religion, which Western governments allegedly seek to undermine and to replace with pseudo-religions (such as LGBT ideology).

According to these narratives the liberal societies of the West are depraved, they seek to destroy traditional values and to promote deviant sexual behavior.

Read similar cases claiming that Western societies are decadent, worship money and are devoted to the obsessive search for pleasure, and  that  Western Europe is moving away from its Christian roots and is dominated by materialism and the pursuit of money.

Activists claimed hundreds of thousands participating in march in memory of Boris Nemtsov

A march took place in Moscow, gathering those who remember Boris Nemtsov. But that was not all. It was not like a commemorative event from the very beginning.

Western media filmed a completely different thing – loud slogans and successful camera angles. How can one doubt in this case that there are tens of thousands?

In fact, just over eight thousand people passed the metal detector that stood in front of the starting point of the procession. But opposition activists thought in their own way: “I think we’ll count tonight, you’ll see the act on my Facebook, there should have been two hundred thousand.”

Disproof

The report is ridiculing opposition march in memory of the murdered opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, presenting its participants as people who don't really know what they were there for and what signs they carried.

The organizers did not claim they were 200 000. Over 22,000 people rallied for Saturday’s march in a square around 2 kilometres (1.24 miles) from the Kremlin, according to White Counter, a monitoring organization that tallies up participants at rallies using metal detector frames, reports Reuters.

Washington is testing options for invading the Kaliningrad region

About 37,000 soldiers from 18 countries will take part in the military exercise “Defender Europe 2020”. 20,000 of them are American military personnel. The main goal is to practice the rapid deployment of American forces to the Russian border. Experts believe that Washington is testing options for invading the territory of the Kaliningrad region.

This article is in line with the pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative of encircling Russia, claiming that US-led military exercise "Defender-Europe 2020" is directed against Russia. Find similar cases here. Exercise Defender-Europe 2020 is the deployment of a division-size combat-credible force from the United States to Europe, the drawing of equipment and the movement of personnel and equipment across the theatre to various training areas. The aim of the exercises is to increase strategic readiness and interoperability by exercising the U.S. military’s ability to rapidly deploy a large combat-credible force and equipment from the United States to Europe; and alongside its allies and partners, quickly respond to a potential crisis. "The joint, multinational training exercise is scheduled to take place from April to May 2020, with personnel and equipment movements occurring from February through July 2020. The exercise supports objectives defined by NATO to build readiness within the alliance and deter potential adversaries. Approximately 37,000 U.S., allied, and partner nation service members are expected to participate with roughly 20,000 soldiers deploying from the U.S," states the official web site of the exercises. Eighteen countries are expected to participate, with exercise activities occurring across 10 countries. More details about the exercise can be found here.

At a press conference in Berlin on January 14, 2020, the Deputy Commander of the US Armed Forces in Europe, General Andrew Rawling, announced that Defender 2020 is not directed against Russia or against another country: "These manoeuvres are not related to any particular country. In this, they differ from past exercises of the Cold War. It is a question of defence in general under various crisis scenarios."
