DISINFO: Western media recognises Ukraine’s defeat

SUMMARY

The Wall Street Journal finally decided to notice something very significant, important, and say it directly under the headline: “It’s time to say goodbye to unrealistic hopes for a miraculous defeat of Russia.” And here's the key confession: "Putin has reason to believe that time is on his side. On the front line, there is no sign that Russia is losing the war of attrition. The Russian economy has suffered, but is far from being destroyed. Putin's power after the unsuccessful June rebellion of Evgeny Prigozhin, paradoxically, has only become stronger. Popular support for the special operation remains unshakable, and even the elites have not turned their backs on Putin".

All this - especially after the publication of the WSJ - becomes what is called the mainstream in the Western press, the prevailing intonation, and pessimism regarding Ukraine takes it away from the focus of attention. People are starting to forget about Ukraine.

RESPONSE

Misrepresentation and twisting out of context - a classic Kremlin technique.

The article misrepresents and twists out of context an opinion piece written by the Director of the Russian and Eurasian programs of the Carnegie Endowment, Eugene Rumer, and the Vice President for research programs of the same foundation, Andrew Weiss, published in The Wall Street Journal on November 16. The paragraph quoted by the pro-Kremlin media outlet was a close translation of the original (except that "the war” was changed for “a special operation” and a few other minor changes).

The Insider assesses that the title was misinterpreted. The article is called It’s Time to End Magical Thinking About Russia’s Defeat. Its meaning would be “Stop waiting for Russia’s defeat as a miracle", as it's clear from its content.

The authors propose a strategy that should lead to victory for Ukraine. They also describe how stopping support for Ukraine could have catastrophic consequences for the global security:

"The Russian leader is prepared to weaponise everything at his disposal to win the war in Ukraine. Nuclear arms control and European security are now hostage to Russia’s insistence on the West ending its support for Ukraine. What remains of the Cold War-era arms control framework will be completely gone in 2026, and there is a growing risk of an unpredictable three-way nuclear arms race among the U.S., Russia and China. Putin will use every global and regional issue — whether the Israel-Gaza war, food security or climate action — as leverage to win the war against Ukraine and the West.

Taken together, this state of affairs poses an unprecedented challenge for Western leaders. Washington and its allies have been remarkably effective at tackling the most urgent aspects of this problem: staving off Ukraine’s collapse, keeping it well-supplied with advanced weapons and real-time intelligence, and devising sanctions against Russia. But now is the time to transition to a long-term strategy that increases and sustains the pressure on the rogue regime in the Kremlin. There should be no illusions that any possible combination of short-term steps will be sufficient to force Putin to abandon his war", - can be read in the article.
