DISINFO: Western politicians attitude towards Sputnik V feeds vaccine hesitancy in Russia
SUMMARY
By shutting out travelers immunized with Sputnik V, the EU is helping undermine Russia’s vaccination drive by feeding domestic doubts.
/---/
The perceived legitimacy of Russia’s vaccines will still be inextricably tied to its reception in the West, which has viewed Sputnik V almost exclusively through a one-sided political lens. Now, it is up to regulators and politicians in the West to decide whether they are content to keep fueling skepticism abroad, and potentially undermine the efforts to save lives.
RESPONSE
An unfounded claim, blaming Western governments and politicians for feeding into vaccine hesitancy in Russia. This claim is not supported by any facts.
There is no evidence of the EU or its regulatory bodies' bias against the Russian vaccine. The European Medicines Agency launched the rolling review of Sputnik V vaccine on 4 March 2021.
According to reporting by Reuters, the developer of Sputnik V missed a recent deadline of June 10, 2021 to submit required data, which may delay the approval process.
The EMA is committed to applying the same regulatory approach and scientific rigour to all vaccine applications that meet European requirements for safety, efficacy and quality and is in dialogue with more than 50 vaccine developers from across the globe.
According to reports in the international media, the slow roll-out of the vaccine campaign in Russia is a combination of insufficient production facilities, logistical problems and lack of trust in the state.
Russian authorities is not allowing the use of foreign vaccines in Russia and have even systematically attempted to discredit the Pfizer and the AstraZeneca vaccines.
