DISINFO: Western sabotage of Nord Stream pipelines caused an environmental disaster

SUMMARY

The disastrous effect on the climate caused by the terrorist attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines carrying Russian gas to Europe is a taboo topic in the coverage by the hegemonic press of the UN conference on Climate Change. Mainstream media, always so concerned by climate and environmental issues, are very careful to avoid the uncomfortable topic of the damage caused by the leak. Russia’s Ministry of Defence has stated that according to available data, representatives of the British Royal Navy took part in the planning, funding and perpetration of the terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea to blow up the Nord Stream pipelines. Meanwhile, the EU maintains a very revealing silence about it.

RESPONSE

Conspiracy theory not backed by any evidence, part of a wider disinformation campaign aiming to fill the information space to portray the West as responsible for the Nord Stream sabotage. The European Union did not name any possible culprit for the sabotage, but contrary to what this disinformation story implies, this is not suspicious but rather a matter of caution until the results of the investigation are revealed.

The allegation that the environmental damage caused by the Nord Stream sabotage is “taboo for mainstream media” is false, as it was addressed at the time by The Washington Post, Euronews, Politico, Deutsche Welle, Euractiv, Le Monde, BBC or Al Jazeera, just to name a few. By claiming this and opportunistically linking it to the UN Climate Summit 2022, this disinformation story serves a double purpose: to seed mistrust in reputable media and foment a conspiracist mindset, and to repeat the unsubstantiated affirmation that the British Royal Navy took part in the sabotage. Repeating previous baseless allegations as established facts while introducing minor variations is a frequent pro-Kremlin disinformation technique.

See other examples of similar disinformation narratives, such as claims that the British Navy was involved in a terrorist attack against the Nord Stream pipelines, that by attacking Nord Stream and the Crimean bridge the West has crossed a dangerous line, that a Reuters article demonstrates that Nord Stream pipelines were destroyed by US military aircraft, or that Nord Stream saboteurs have plunged the EU into energy poverty.
