Disinfo: So called Western “values” are a denial of human value and Russia wants to be protected from them

Russia doesn’t want the pseudo Western values to penetrate in Russia because, unfortunately, they are a denial of human value.

NGOs defending the right of LGBT or combating violence against women will have to stop since the Russian people expressed their will in the referendum for amendments to the constitution.

Recurrent narrative about the moral decay of Europe and the pernicious western values. This disinformation appeared in the same video as another message about the Russian government, unlike France or the EU, having a legitimacy that comes from the base.

The values advocated by the European Union as they are stated in the Lisbon Treaty and the European Charter of fundamental rights of the EU are:

Human dignity: Human dignity is inviolable. It must be respected, protected and constitutes the real basis of fundamental rights.

Freedom: Freedom of movement gives citizens the right to move and reside freely within the Union. Individual freedoms such as respect for private life, freedom of thought, religion, assembly, expression and information are protected by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Democracy: The functioning of the EU is founded on representative democracy. Being a European citizen also means enjoying political rights. Every adult EU citizen has the right to stand as a candidate and to vote in elections to the European Parliament. EU citizens have the right to stand as candidate and to vote in their country of residence, or in their country of origin.

Equality: Equality is about equal rights for all citizens before the law. The principle of equality between women and men underpins all European policies and is the basis for European integration. It applies in all areas. The principle of equal pay for equal work became part of the Treaty of Rome in 1957. Although inequalities still exist, the EU has made significant progress.

Rule of law: The EU is based on the rule of law. Everything the EU does is founded on treaties, voluntarily and democratically agreed by its EU countries. Law and justice are upheld by an independent judiciary. The EU countries gave final jurisdiction to the European Court of Justice which judgements have to be respected by all.

Human rights: Human rights are protected by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. These cover the right to be free from discrimination on the basis of sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation, the right to the protection of your personal data, and or the right to get access to justice.

In no way can these rights be called a negation of human value. The fight against violence against women and the observance of the rights of LGBT and other minorities cannot be labelled as a negation of human value.

The Association Agreement contains 120 secret articles on migration, gay marriage and juvenile justice

The Association Agreement contains 120 secret articles that oblige Georgia to adopt gay marriage, receive migrants and adopt juvenile justice in the form of the Children’s Code.

The claim contains multiple pro-Kremlin disinformation narratives on the Association Agreement (AA) and the EU:

  • The Association Agreement is a public document that any citizen can read. See earlier case on the same issue here. The claim on the "120 secret articles" is a lie.
  • Same-sex marriage is not a requirement for membership of either the EaP or EU membership. EU member states decide upon issues around marriage and family independently. See similar cases on same-sex marriage here and here.
  • "Juvenile justice" has been a target of disinformation campaigns in Georgia for years. Groundless allegations are spread, claiming that this issue has been imposed by the West and gives minors unlimited rights, which in the end is directed against the institution of family and its values. More about the disinformation narratives around juvenile justice in Georgia can be found here.

Mein Kampf is one of the most popular books in Georgia

The propaganda of radical ideas is intensifying in Georgia. One of the examples is the release of Mein Kampf’s new edition this year, to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the victory and 100th anniversary of the genocide of South Ossetian people.

Recurring pro-Kremlin narrative portraying other countries as Nazis and an unfounded claim on Mein Kampf as a best-seller in Georgia.

Old editions of the book in Georgian can be found in online bookshops and university libraries. Fact-checker Myth Detector reached out to the main publishers in Georgia. None of them have released the new edition of Mein Kampf.

EU will fall apart in 20-30 years

The coronavirus pandemic in Europe caused an economic shock of a completely unexpected magnitude. The EU is losing its unity, its’ countries are in deep crisis. The EU project will die no later than 2040-2050.

This claim exploits the coronavirus pandemic to push a recurring pro-Kremlin disinformation narrative about the EU's alleged imminent collapse. There is no evidence to support the claim that the pandemic is resulting in the death, or obsolescence, of the EU.

The European Union is supporting the Member States in addressing the crisis, and mitigating the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. To cushion the blow to people’s livelihoods and the economy, the European Commission has adopted a comprehensive economic response to the outbreak, applied the full flexibility of EU fiscal rules, has revised its State Aid rules and proposed to set up a EUR 37 billion Coronavirus Response Investment Initiative to provide liquidity to small businesses and the health care sector.
