DISINFO: Zelenskyy is an MI6 agent who receives all his orders from London
SUMMARY
During the 2019 election campaign in Ukraine, all Western media outlets were openly saying that Volodymyr Zelenskyy was an agent of MI6. He was constantly travelling to London and British emissaries were coming to Ukraine to work with him. He was surrounded by British agents. He is a man of Britain, and then one of the United States. Therefore, London makes all the decisions for Zelenskyy.
RESPONSE
This is a recurring disinformation narrative from pro-Kremlin outlets trying to denigrate Ukraine’s statehood and its independence. This claim was made in the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy was elected president in 2019 in general elections with 73 percent in his favour and 24 percent for his main rival, the then President Petro Poroshenko.
Ukraine is a sovereign and independent state with a democratically elected president and parliament. It carries out its independent policy. Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity have been violated by continuous acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces since 2014. Ukraine's aspiration to enter NATO and the European Union is enshrined in its constitution. It is Kyiv's sovereign right to choose which alliances to join, and Russia is not entitled to interfere. Ukraine receives weapons and financial assistance but it does not mean that Zelenskyy is an MI6 agent.
