“Russophobia spewed out by Washington, the Pentagon, NATO and the European Union has created the worst crisis in relations with Russia since the Cold War.”

“The main aim of this war [between the US and Russia or the US and China] is to destroy Russia, because then its rich natural sources can be taken for free.”

“The revival of Russia’s national identity usually leads to the rapid growth of its physical strength. Instinctively, no-one in the West likes it. Sanctions are the reaction of an old and tough enemy to Russia’s reinforcement.”

Repetition is one of the most powerful and frequent techniques used by the pro-Kremlin disinformation campaign. And framing Russia as a victim of Western aggression and “Russophobia” is one of the key disinforming narratives. This week, we saw both neatly combined.

The first example above was written by an author who also reports for Russian state-funded Sputnik, and it was published by several online websites.

The other two messages were broadcast in a popular news programme watched by millions of people on Russian state-controlled Pervyi Kanal.

Such messaging is certainly powerful, but facts contradict it. For example, the record of how the US, NATO and the EU worked hard to build strong cooperation with Russia since the 1990s is clear. And of course it was Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine and illegal annexation of Crimea which led to various policy dialogues and mechanisms of cooperation being temporarily frozen, as well as to sanctions.

Sweden revisiting Poltava?

Another example of disinformation materialised when newspaper Pravda claimed that Sweden is considering sending its army to Donetsk. Sweden and Ukraine, we learned, now demand that the results of the battle of Poltava – a battle that ended Sweden’s status as a major power over 300 years ago – should be cancelled and Russia recognised as a loser. For the debunk see here.

For a Swedish audience, this may well sound absurd, even ridiculous. But pro-Kremlin messaging is adept at identifying and tailoring specific messages to specific audiences. From the point of view of an audience that has been constantly fed the image of the West as an aggressor, such stories can most definitely be perceived as fact.

The most extreme example of disinformation about Western aggression that we uncovered this week was a conspiracy theory presented on Russian TV channel NTV. In the light of the investigation of Russia’s interference in the last US elections, we see more and more often the mirroring accusation by pro-Kremlin disinformation: that the West is interfering in Russian elections.

Thus we heard this week that the US-linked intelligence services have a secret plan to murder one of the “weakest” Russian presidential election candidates. The claims are not backed up by any kind of evidence. And no explanation was offered as to what could possibly be the goal of this “secret plan”.

Disinformation cases reported in the previous two weeks:

EU and NATO's war agenda exposed
Additional details: Disgraced former minister Zijlstra stands accused of gross distortion of Russia’s foreign policy. Since the US and European-backed illegal coup in Ukraine in early 2014, geopolitical reality has been turned upside-down. American and European corporate media have peddled relentless anti-Russia propaganda accusing Moscow of “aggression” and “expansionism” in Europe. This torrent of Russophobia spewed out by Washington, the Pentagon, NATO and the European Union has created the worst crisis in relations with Russia since the Cold War ended nearly three decades ago. There are real fears that the mounting crisis could escalate into an all-out war involving nuclear powers.

...

Abominably, European government officials are willing to risk plunging millions of citizens into a war with Russia based on lies and warped, self-serving prejudices.

Accusations of Russophobia are typical for pro-Kremlin disinformation. https://euvsdisinfo.eu/disinformation-cases/?text=russophobia&disinfo_issue=&date=

There is no NATO war agenda.

  • There is in fact a clear record of strong cooperation between the EU and Russia, dating back to 1994, when the two sides negotiated a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement. Russia was identified as a strategic partner for the EU, and was the only country with which the EU held summits not once, but twice a year. A new EU-Russia agreement was being negotiated up until 2014, at which point talks were unfortunately suspended due to Russia's involvement in the Ukraine conflict. Negotiations were also in train on visa facilitation. There was also cooperation between the EU and Russia on a number of foreign policy issues, some of which continues to this day. The EU and its Member States have maintained a clear policy of reaching out to Russian society and youth, mainly through the Erasmus+ student exchange programme and other people to people contacts.
  • NATO has consistently worked hard to build a cooperative relationship with Russia since the early 1990s, through the Partnership for Peace and creation of a NATO-Russia Council, and specific cooperation in the Western Balkans on and issues like counter-narcotics and counter-terrorism. In fact, as NATO points out, no other NATO partner has been offered a comparable relationship, nor a similarly comprehensive institutional framework: http://bit.ly/2e0TZnG.
  • In 1997, Russia was invited to join the G7 group of major advanced economies in the world, thus forming the G8. (At the time, Russia ranked 14th to 17th in the list of countries according to GDP: http://bit.ly/2dWb51l; http://bit.ly/2ejhOpw; http://bit.ly/2dqu4jQ). In 2006, President Putin hosted the G8 summit in Saint Petersburg. Russia's membership of the G8 was suspended in 2014 because of its illegal annexation of Crimea.
  • Russia joined the Council of Europe, the continent's leading human rights organisation, in 1996.

There was no coup in Ukraine four years ago. The demonstrations which began in Kyiv in November 2013 – called "Maidan", or "Euromaidan" – were not provoked from outside but were a result of the Ukrainian people's frustration with former President Yanukovych's last minute U-turn when, after seven years of negotiation, he refused to sign the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement and halted progress towards Ukraine's closer relationship with the EU as a result of Russian pressure. The protesters' demands included constitutional reform, a stronger role for parliament, formation of a government of national unity, an end to corruption, early presidential elections and an end to violence http://bit.ly/2ftv6iT.

As for Moscow's aggression: The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has stated that “the information available suggests that the situation within the territory of Crimea and Sevastopol amounts to an international armed conflict between Ukraine and the Russian Federation. This international armed conflict began at the latest on 26 February when the Russian Federation deployed members of its armed forces to gain control over parts of the Ukrainian territory without the consent of the Ukrainian Government https://www.icc-cpi.int/iccdocs/otp/161114-otp-rep-PE_ENG.pdf. EU´s CFSP might be voted in the majority, there is no option for the Czech Republic than to choose between Czexit or lose its sovereignty
Additional details: The European Union might soon have a unified foreign policy that would be voted by an overwhelming majority and not unanimously as it has been up to now! The Czech Republic has no choice but to decide between the demise of its statehood or Czexit! If foreign policy is to be voted in the majority, we will lose our sovereignty for good!

...

Economic relations also fall into the foreign policy segment. If the EU's foreign policy would be defined only by the majority, then it would be a policy that would suit Germany and France, less of the other countries, and for the Slavic countries in Europe, such a policy would be totally liquidated. The Czech government and the president would no longer be able to travel to Russia or China and negotiate trade deals there, as the new foreign policy of the EU would make that decision.

The decision making process concerning the CFSP looks as follows; The European Council (EU heads of state/government) identifies unanimously the EU's strategic interests, determines the objectives and defines the broad thrust of the CFSP.Taking into account these objectives and strategic direction, the Council of the EU votes on actions or positions to be taken under the CFSP.
While decisions made by the Council of the EU require unanimity, some aspects of these decisions can be decided by qualified majority voting, which means 55 % of EU country votes, representing at least 65 % of the EU's population. http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=LEGISSUM%3Aai0025.

The PESCO initiative is a voluntary structure https://eeas.europa.eu/headquarters/headquarters-Homepage/34226/permanent-structured-cooperation-pesco-factsheet_en.

The EU's economic relations do not fall within the EU foreign policy segment. On July 1st 1968, when the customs union was established, a common trade policy of the European Union (then the European Community) was established. Since the adoption of the Treaty of Lisbon, the common trade policy has been among the exclusive competences of the EU. This means that business and economic law is adopted and international trade agreements are concluded by the EU as a whole and the not the Member States. With the accession to the EU, the Czech Republic formally renounced the right to pursue an independent trade policy and joined a customs union that applies uniform arrangements for trade relations binding on all EU Member States to imports and exports to third countries. This does not mean that it resigns from its interests in third markets. On the contrary. As an EU member, the Czech Republic actively promotes its trade and political interests through EU structures, ie through a common trade policy. None of this means that the President of the Czech Republic or anyone else is prevented from traveling to Russia or China or anywhere else in order to negotiate bilateral trade agreements there, which, after all, the Czech President´s journeys to Russia and to China prove itself.

Disproof note:

According to the Ministry of National Defence Republic of Lithuania, Lithuania supports Ukraine in every possible and legally permitted form, including military support.

“It is yet another attempt to disseminate bold lies, to set partners against each other and to damage public trust in Lithuania’s support to Ukraine, as well as to discredit Lithuania in international arena,” Mr. R. Karoblis said. “The security and stability of Ukraine, and its ability to handle emerging threats successfully, has a very significant influence to the security situation of the entire region, therefore cooperation with Ukraine has been one of the key foreign and security policy priorities of Lithuania for a long time already - and it will remain that way, despite hostile efforts to diminish Lithuania’s support to Ukraine. Lithuania stands by the independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine and it will further support Ukraine’s aspirations of European and Euro-Atlantic integration just as it did.”

Helsinki supports Ukraine in its anti-Russian propaganda.

...

Finland and Ukraine agreed that Helsinki will provide financial assistance to Ukrainian schools in the amount of about 6 million euros over four years. With the funds provided, Ukrainian teachers will be able to upgrade their skills in teaching "modern children".

...

After the coup in Kiev in 2013-2014, many Western countries supported the illegal Ukrainian government. Then, following the annexation of the Crimea to Russia, the West introduced a whole package of anti-Russian sanctions and actually declared Russia an "occupying country".

Playing into the hands of Kiev, the Western "partners" turn a blind eye to the flagrant violations of the Minsk agreements by Ukraine and do not really influence the calling of the Ukrainian authorities to account.

Visa liberalisation has raised the terrorism threat and forces Georgians to leave their country
Additional details: About 35,000 people left Georgia. We are not arguing about numbers, as some mention 30,000. Double that number of Iraqis and Syrians arrived from the Asian countries, where the terrorism threat is high. These people establish themselves in our country, in our motherland, where a Georgian could not find happiness. Georgians could not find happiness in Adjara, where Turks have been given everything… Then, Georgians could not find happiness in Kakheti, too, where Iranians are dominant instead of Georgians, who can also develop business, process land and create production. Georgians, thus, leave their homes and it directly relates with visa liberalization and all this process, because people are leaving our country.

Disproof note:

No evidence given, recurring disinformation about the visa liberalisation with the EU https://euvsdisinfo.eu/disinformation-cases/?text=visa+liberalisation&disinfo_issue=&date=. Since the enactment of visa liberalization (March 28, 2017) until October 20, 2017, in total, 160,000 citizens of Georgia benefitted from visa-free travel. After the expiration of the 90-day term, up to 10,000 citizens did not return to Georgia. This number does not encompass merely those citizens who chose to stay illegally. It also includes those, who:

  1. Own a residence permit in one of the EU countries or a double nationality;
  2. Received the right of a prolonged stay in one of the EU countries after benefitting from the visa free travel (i.e. students, asylum-seekers);
  3. Travelled from the EU countries to third countries (i.e. Ukraine, Belarus) and did not return to Georgia from the latter.

Moreover, the visa liberalization topic is often connected to a false claim that it will empty the country and lead it into a demographic catastrophe. Discussing the visa-free travel in Schengen zone countries from the demographic perspective is manipulative, as visa liberalization for Georgia only concerns short-term visits to European countries, not free movement of workers. No links to increased risk of terrorism is being proven. Further debunking by Myth Detector http://mythdetector.ge/en/myth/two-lies-irma-inashvili-about-visa-liberalization-and-georgian-farmers.

The Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA), as part of the Association Agreement, entered into force on 1 September 2017, having been provisionally applied since 1 January 2016. This constitutes a major milestone in bilateral trade relations and offers new economic opportunities to both the EU and Ukraine. Ukrainian businesses receive stable and predictable preferential access to the largest market in the world, with over 500 million consumers.

Exports from Ukraine to the EU and Ukrainian imports from the EU both increased by about 27% in the first eight months of 2017 compared to the same period the previous year. https://eeas.europa.eu/headquarters/headquarters-homepage_en/4081/%20EU-Ukraine%20relations,%20factsheet

The Association Agreement with the EU has no impact on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
